Halloween Returns to Second Life!

The wind outside nested in each tree, prowled the sidewalks in invisible treads like unseen cats, Tom Skelton shivered. Anyone could see that the wind was a special wind this night, and the darkness took on a special feel because it was All Hallows' Eve. Everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold or orange velvet. Smoke panted up out of a thousand chimneys like the plumes of funeral parades. From kitchen windows drifted two pumpkin smells: gourds being cut, pies being baked.

Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree

Autumn always means the arrival of one of my favorite holidays!

In fact, the entire Yuletide Holiday season begins for me with this holiday.  (Growing up, things were kind of dull for me except for this time of the year so I made the most of it.)

Of course, that holiday is Halloween!

Whether it be in Second Life (SL) or Real Life (RL)!

(I did lead a futile effort to have it made an official school holiday in my youth.  This was the first of many experiences that I had with the overbearing weight of authority while growing up.)

Although, it’s been a while since I wore a costume for the event (Significant Other is grateful for the small things.) I always look forward to it and have plenty of candy for the trick or treaters who come by.

This time of the year is also when Perryn Peterson reaches out to let me know what his band at Mieville has planned and allows me the privilege of a quick preview of what’s planned.

Things are a little different this year at Mieville though.

Wyvern Dryke, a longstanding member of the Mieville community ran the build and the whole show was his.

Wyvern had big shoes to fill following in Perryn’s footsteps but he’s done an amazing job!

The event is called Nawlins Halloween: Haunted Mardi Gras.

The theme is Mardi Gras mixed with Halloween: think celebration, Samhain, spooks, Voodoo, swamps, and bright Mardi Gras and Halloween colors such as gold, green, and
purple.  Think decadence and celebration of life in death.

Think of all of these things and you have the Mieville Halloween for this year!

The look and feel is different this year.  It seems more overcast and gloomy. Maybe the darkened skies with lightning are creating this moody environment.  (Be warned, I was the kid who went through the haunted house multiple times on the school trip.  I’ll ignore Significant Other’s comment about that explaining a lot.)

The physical layout is different too.  There appears to be less of a grid format as in past events and more of a randomness to things.  I kept getting lost during my visit.  (Significant Other asks what else is new.)

In a word, it feels sinister which is what Halloween is supposed to feel like!  (Safely sinister like that haunted house I kept going back to in RL.)

Walking around the grounds, when not trying to get lost, the atmosphere felt ominous.  A sense of impending doom.  (Significant Other suggests it’s blowback from the ongoing US Presidential election.) Maybe this is because things really are different.

Some sights and sounds are familiar but many are different.

Pumpkins, witches, and clowns (the scary sort) abound.  Ghosts dance in storefronts.  The event is a celebration of color.  Amusements are available for those who haven’t been frightened out of their wits.  Make sure to check out the Magic Mirror at
Madame Magda’s, just ask yes or no questions in local chat and solve all your problems.  (Neither Mielville nor I take any responsibility for the consequences of doing so.)

And, there will be plenty to see and do, entertainment, gachas, shopping, food and drinks, parades, dances and much more!  A special building for gachas is being provided.

Dozens of merchants will be participating and will have their wares on display.  A Trick-or-Treat mini-hunt especially designed by Wyvern will be taking place with gifts from many of the participating merchants.

This year’s Halloween celebration in Mieville is different from earlier ones but no less fun and exciting. As always, the considerable efforts of Wyvern, his team, and the merchants are realized in this scary spectacle!

Mieville’s Halloween celebration is still the “go to” seasonal event inworld!

The fun runs from October 7th to October 31st, Halloween itself!

The celebration can be found here.

Come, have fun, and maybe be a little bit frightened!

I’d like to thank Perryn for giving me the scoop as always and Wyvern for his
extraordinary efforts in pulling together this year’s Halloween festival!

I’d also like to thank my Companion who supplied all the pictures used in this story and that can also be found on this flickr page.  (She’s also grateful that this assignment allowed her to keep her clothes on given how cool the Halloween air can be.)

As always, I’m grateful to all inworld for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.

Are You Going to STEAM IX in Second Life?

Not all those who wander are lost.

J. R. R. Tolkien

Well, it’s that time of the year again!
Spring is getting closer.  (At least for some of you.) Getting out and about after spending the winters indoors becomes more appealing.  (Significant Other can’t wait.) Meeting friends and doing things with the Sun on our faces can happen once again.
All these things occur both in Real Life (RL) and Second Life (SL).
One of those things that occurs every year at this time is the only remaining Victorian STEAMpunk Hunt in SL, namely STEAM IX!
Continuing in my unbroken stream since STEAM VIII and STEAM VII (I sometimes go walkabout inworld and miss events.  Significant Other says I’m guilty of this in RL too.  What can I say other than I tend to wander.)  I’m here to blog about this year’s STEAM event which runs from March 1st to 31st across the Grid.
Once again, Perryn Peterson has outdone himself in organizing this event and bring together many merchants and residents to partake in all that SL has to offer.
The starting location for the Hunt is the Steampunk Information Center in Mieville.  From here hunters begin their hunts across 126 stops with 124 vendors participating all with gifts for them.  This year’s theme is “Romancing the STEAM” and if past Hunts are any guide, the merchants will be very creative in their offerings.
Participation has been very good so far.
Perryn reports that over 10,000 residents visited the starting point on the first weekend which was a new record for Mielville with over 1,000 actually starting the Hunt.  The kickoff party was held simultaneously with the Mardi Gras party and over 6,000 attended that.  (As I’ve reported before, Perryn does know how to throw a party!)  He also reports that this has been the smoothest kick off yet for a Hunt.
There are new merchants and several are already in the running for the Fave Five trophies awarded to those merchants cited as being the best by the hunters.  So, maybe there’ll be some surprises this year!
For more information, there are a blog and website.  Pictures of the merchants’ gifts can be seen on the former, details of the Hunt at the latter.
My old friend, Glorf Bulmer, has returned to SL and as is her custom has completed the entire Hunt (Glorf’s an overachiever.) and has reported on the gifts in her blog which I recommend to all!
There is still time to visit the Hunt and see all the hard work and wonderful gifts from Perryn and the merchants.  So, please come and enjoy!  Tell ‘em web sent you!
          Maybe we’ll meet there!

Going to Mardi Gras in Second Life?

I'm supporting the New Orleans economy by maxing out my credit cards in a prolonged blackout.

Anonymous

Well, it’s that time of year again.
Winter is drawing to an end.  (Maybe for some of you.  I’m sitting here at -1° F with wind chill and another ice/snow storm around the corner on Sunday evening in Real Life (RL).  Is there any wonder why I spend so much time in Second Life (SL)?)
Which means that Mardi Gras is not too far away!
For those of you not familiar with the Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans, it is the local version of the carnival season common in many Catholic countries in the period between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten season.
Since Lent meant fasting and abstinence from life’s pleasures until Easter arrived, the tradition of parades, masquerades, and generally riotous celebrating beforehand somehow began.  Someone once told me that the excesses of these days goes back to the times before modern refrigeration when everything had to be used up prior to the start of fasting or be thrown away unused.  (I’m still trying to figure out why some of the world’s wildest public parties came to be associated with one of the world’s most conservative religions and most solemn holydays.  But, I’ll leave that to someone else’s blog to ponder.)
Perryn Peterson, my good friend and someone who has never met a holiday he didn’t like has taken on the challenge of throwing Mardi Gras inworld this year.
Of course, the festivities will be located in the Victorian Steampunk New Orleans in Mieville.   Recently, I took a quick tour while the site was being prepared for the celebrations.
I meet Perryn at the landing zone which is on the waterfront right by The Mark Twain, a traditional Mississippi steam rear paddle wheeler docked by the quay.  Perryn has not yet put on his costume but I guarantee he will stand out from among all the other partyers.
Looking down either way along the dockside, I see merchants’ booths and shops fitted out with holiday merchandise and Mardi Gras decorations.  The traditional colors of purple, gold and green are everywhere.
Perryn and I walk along the quayside as he tells me of the preparations and the events planned.  Our walk takes us along the parade route where if there are enough entries a parade of floats will occur.
About fifty merchants will have their goods on display.  Perryn points out the voodoo shop.  Other highlights were Miss Moonsugah Monday, a food specialist whose delicacies and treats will be at the Café.  Other notable shops are SebastianTiogar's "A Rare Vintage and Peckbeth’s.  Both offering merchandise in the spirit of Mardi Gras.  Perryn always has a good selection of merchants with unusual merchandise at his his events.
Perry tells me that many of the merchants are in the Mardi Gras spirit of “lagniappe”, or, giving customers a little more because of the holiday.  (Think baker’s dozen.)
Later, when I return for pictures for this story, I meet Joanna Claremont, the proprietress of Cherie’s, a high end women’s clothing shop.  She designs and makes her own clothes and they are of particularly high quality.  Joanna is setting up her booth and arranging her merchandise.
Joanna has the spirit of a SL merchant.  She’s excites about her goods and can’t wait for customers to see them.  If you’re in the market for quality late nineteenth century women’s dresses then do please check out Cherie’s!
Mardi Gras will run from March 1st to 4th. (That’s why this story is a day early!)
On the Saturday, the first night, March 1st, there will be a dance starting at 6:00PM SLT at the Mardi Gras sim.  Rabidd Alter will be the DJ and is not to be missed!  This will also serve as the kickoff for STEAM IX: The Hunt.  But, more about that later!
There will be cash prizes for best costumes and titler at the dance.
I’d like to thank Perryn for taking the time to guide me around as well as for all his efforts in arranging these fun, inworld activities which help to bring the SL community together.
I’d also like to thank Joanna Claremont for stopping her work to talk with an itinerant scribe.

As always, I’m grateful to all inworld for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.
I’ve included below links to a few pictures of Mardi Gras while it was being set up.  But, pictures never do justice (especially mine) so go and see the results of all the hard work of Perryn and his team.

The Chinese Lunar New Year in Second Life

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.

Buddha

January is behind us and the New Year celebrations are behind us. Or, are they?  The Chinese Lunar New Year is soon going to be upon us and as my friends in both Second Life (SL) and Real Life (RL) tell me, it’s quite a shindig too.  (Truth be told, I’ve done a fair bit of Lunar New Year celebrating myself in RL.)
Some background first.  This is the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac.  Using the corresponding Wu Xing (Five Elements), this year’s element is water.  Check out the links if you’re not familiar with the concepts because they are different from the traditional Western zodiac which many of us are familiar with.  They give an interesting insight into Chinese culture and its traditional underpinnings.

My old friend, Perryn Peterson, also one of the most interesting people I’ve met in SL and who I think is singlehandedly trying to recreate every holiday and festival in RL in SL, is hosting a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration in the Mieville sim.
My regular readers, there are a few of you, will know that Perryn has recently hosted the Day of the Dead Celebration inworld followed by a Dickens Christmas.

Oh, and by the way, if you’re looking for the New Year celebrations inworld this coming February 10th, the official date, then you’ll be out of luck because of a conflict with Perryn’s Mardi Gras celebration taking place at the same time (I still don’t know how he does it all.)  the Chinese Lunar New Year inworld will be celebrated from February 16th to 24th. (SL is nothing if not flexible.)
Here’s the program of events at Mieville:

新年好 Day 1 (Saturday 16th February)
12:00 PM SLT:  Parade!  Dress in Chinese costume and join us to open the Chinese New Year Festival in Mieville!

ALL WEEK:  There will be a mini-hunt for Lucky Red Packets!
Reward of 2L per packet found!  Many are hidden!  Good luck!

新年好 Day 2 (Sunday, 17th February)
Cai Shen -- the God of Wealth's birthday and the birthday of all dogs!

10:00 AM SLT:  Bring your pet dog to Mieville for the Dogs Parade!

新年好 Day 3 (Monday, 18th February)
The return of the Kitchen God!

We'll have a special celebration honoring this messenger to the Jade Emperor as he returns from Heaven.
6:00 PM SLT:  Meet for an evening of friendship, food and drink!

新年好 Day 4 (Tuesday, 19th February)
6:00 PM SLT:  Fireworks on the wharf!

A chance to explore the wonderful shops of Chinatown!

新年好 Day 5 (Wednesday, 20th February)
Everybody's Birthday (Renri)!

Today everybody gets a year older!
6:00 PM SLT:  Special Chinese birthday party!

新年好 Day 6 (Thursday, 21st February)
Since food is a great part of celebrating Chinese New Year, our Salon this evening will be devoted to discussing the customs and special foods eaten during the Chinese New Year festival.

Meet at 6:00 PM SLT.

新年好 Day 7 (Friday, 22nd February)
The day of Guan Yu, a famous Chinese general who is considered to be the Taoist God of War.

We'll have a fishing contest to honour this god!  Whoever is the fiercest "feesher" will win Lindens and lots of good luck!
Fishing!  Off the wharf in Chinatown!  9:00 PM SLT!

新年好 Day 8 (Saturday, 23rd February)
Chinese New Year Weekly Theme Dance!

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM SLT.

新年好 Day 9 (Sunday, 24th February)
Lantern Festival!

There'll be FIREWORKS!
4:00 PM SLT:  You are invited to parade with lanterns as we celebrate the Chinese version of Valentine's Day and close the festival.
TURN IN your Lucky Red Packets!

Reward of 2L per packet found!

As I hope you will see there is a full program of events around the Chinese Lunar New Year and I believe makes the wait all the more worthwhile!
I want to thank Perryn for forwarding to me the details of his Chinese Lunar New Year and taking the time to answer my questions.

Below, I’ve included links to pictures from the site of the Mieville Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations but because a party is always more fun than pictures (especially when I’m the photographer) please visit it and see for yourselves!
And if you’re looking for something to do while waiting for the SL Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations then check out Perryn’s Mardi Gras celebrations from February 9th to 12th in the Mieville sim.
As always, I’m grateful to all for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.
