Remembering VE Day

Recently, Jessii Warrhol contacted me about several events sponsored by SL Flying Tigers that are happening in Second Life (SL) during May.  The theme for these is Remembrance because this year VE (Victory in Europe) Day is on May 8^th and the American Memorial Day falls on May 28^th.     

The first event is the VE Day Celebrations in the London Sims from May 4^th to May 8th, 2012.  Join the Flying Tigers, THI Industries, and the London Sims for four days of remembrance for VE Day.  Scheduled events include a replica of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which will occur over the London Sims, WWII plane exhibits, and a Remembrance book at the London Sims Tower Hill War Memorial.  A complete schedule of events will be posted on www.theslflyingtigers.info and www.thelondonsims.blogspot.com.

Next from May 19^th to May 20^th, 2012, the WWII Conference takes place at the Flying Tiger's Sims. The First Annual Virtual WWII Conference is looking for presenters who can present on various related subjects about WWII. The Flying Tigers' Group and Sims will allow participants in the conference as either an attendee or a presenter from your home, school, or work - without unnecessary travel or expenses. Conference presenters will be able to present virtually using a 3D avatar.  Presentations will be in SL, but topics can be on any WWII specific themes.  Presentations can be from individuals, businesses, non-profits, educational institutions, or educational support businesses or industry. The Virtual Pioneers, an ISTE SL group, is our official educational partner with the conference.  http://ww2conference.blogspot.com/.

Then on May 20, 2012, the Flying Tiger's Flyover at the 4th Annual Bay City Anniversary will take place at 1:30PM SLT over the Bay City Fairgrounds. The Bay City Municipal Airport, the only Linden Labs owned airport, was a recent exhibitor at the SL Airport Expo.

And, there’s more to come!  From May 25^th to May 28^th, the Memorial Day Weekend Events will occur.  During this weekend there will also be a military merchant's fair for content creators, as well as three days of live DJ’s, contests, and events in the Flying Tiger's Sims.  (I’ve been to one of their earlier ones and these are great fun with great music.) 

Finally, there’s the June 1^st to June 3^rd Vintage Fashion Weekend.  (OK, this one isn’t in May but it’s close enough!) This event will feature vintage fashions and accessories for three days of fashion shows.  A preview of modern fashions will also occur.  It is an event where fashion meets aviation, with the Flying Tiger's providing the backdrop to the shows.  The show is being staffed by Ava Jhamin, who is CEO of L'Amour Productions and Management.

I would encourage all to go and see these events.  I realize that these remembrance activities are occurring within a virtual world but that does not lessen the gravity of these events as we remember those who went before us and saved the world from certain darkness and oblivion.

My new Second Life (SL) friend, Jessii Warrhol, an inworld entertainment manager, recently reached out to me about three new events that she’s currently promoting inworld.  I had met her when I blogged about the March Military Expo last month.

The events are focused on aviation, WW 2, and vintage fashion.

The first event is the Airport Expo.  The purpose of this event is to bring attention to inworld airports and will give airport operators a chance to come together inworld and show their wares to a larger audience.  There will be music, events, live DJ’s, and contests.  The Expo will be held at the WW2 Memorial Park from April 22nd  to 27^th.  There is a blog that will contain all relevant information. 

Why fly a plane in SL when everyone can fly without one?  I suspect the technical challenge along with the thrill of moving another object in simulated heavier than air flight is part of it.  (Bet you didn’t think I knew words like that did you now?)

Next up is the First Annual Virtual WW 2 Conference sponsored by the SL Flying Tigers.  This event is intended to promote awareness of WW 2 and educate people about it.  The program is ambitious as Real Life (RL) presenters will be reaching out to their audience via avatars.  Given how WW 2 is beginning to recede into memory, events like this are important for the recent generations to remember the sacrifices of those who went before us and what can happen when we stop paying attention to what’s happening around us. 

The Conference will take place on May 19^th and 20^th at the WW 2 Tribute Sim and the WW 2 Pacific Sim.

Finally, there is the Vintage Fashion Weekend from June 1^st to 3^rd.  The intent here is to bring together military and vintage clothing and accessory makers in the WW2 themed Flying Tigers' sims and to show off vintage creations in SL. More information can be found at their blog.

These events are additional good examples of how SL can be used to promote activities around certain themes and use social media.

Jessii and her colleagues have been busy preparing for these shows.  Even if you’re not a flying or WW 2 enthusiast, I recommend going.  The quality of the workmanship in these productions is always superb and the events are fun.
