Sex and the Single Avatar in Second Life IX – Still Nude Inworld

Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display. The nude is condemned to never being naked. Nudity is a form of dress.

John Berger

One of the things I like about Second Life (SL) is how people help one another even when they might appear to be competitors.
Recently, I blogged about a new nude resort inworld, Naked, owned and operated by The Cat (AKA Cat).  A short while ago, Cat dropped me a note card with a referral to a new nudist club, Utopia Naked Isle Resort, that was opening in SL.  She said it was different from her own but was a nice place and suggested I write a story about it.
Now, I consider myself lucky when people just read my stories let alone calling me up and referring story leads to me.  I always chase down leads from readers. (Hint, hint.)  Maybe they will lead to a story, maybe not.  But, I’ll check them out. When someone like Cat refers me to her competition then I really want to go and take a close look.  This time it paid off.  I hope my readers think so too.
So, I undressed and went visiting.  (I know that I’ve been doing a lot of this lately.  What between Cat’s place and my visit last week to the nude BDSM resorts, I haven’t been dressed a lot lately.  But this is what I do for my readership.  I know some of you live vicariously through my travels.)
I arrive at the main LZ for Utopia which opens onto the common area for visitors.  Behind me is the entrance to the forest or VIP area of which more about later.
The look is tropical.  Palm trees are everywhere with colorful tropical flowers profusely line the walkways.  Stepping out of the arrival building I can see Max’s Topless Bar straight ahead.  To my left a stone pathway leads to a beach with nearby waterfalls.  On the right, another path leads to more beaches and waterfalls.    The layout is natural and reminds me of tropical gardens in Real Life (RL).  (Contrary to popular belief, I sometimes do get out of SL and get around in RL.)
Walking straight ahead, I pass Max’s (Are topless bars in a nudist resort a sign of conservative leanings?)  and come upon the dance floor overlooked by a DJ’s booth.  Dance pose balls are scattered about.  Typically, the owners, Dai Aloix, Lori66, and Max are here when onsite.
I continue my walk along the beach where I hear waves crashing on the breakers.  Another piece of realism that enhances audiovisual experience of being in Utopia.
Which brings me to another interesting aspect of Utopia.  Besides being a nudist resort where guests can come, dance, and hang out.  There are facilities for couples or whatever number, who am I to assume, to go off and be by themselves for some privacy if you know what I mean.  (Of course the exhibitionists can stay out on the dance floor if they like.)  I spy a gazebo with a comfortable, round settee with some particularly attractive features (I’m talking about its menu).  A nearby pier also comes with functions not usually associated with such devices in RL.
The atmosphere is aided by tiki torches, beach chairs, and other beach resort furnishings scattered about.  Ancient ruins back in the jungle add a certain mystic aura.
My walk takes me on a circular path around the island and back to where I started at the LZ. I pass through the building into the VIP area, the forest  (It costs $300L to join and, yes, I paid the fee.  I want to keep my autonomy.)
The VIP area has an Asian theme.  TP’s are available near the entrance to take VIP’s to the themed skyboxes.  Unlike other resorts, VIP’s pay a small fee for use of these facilities. These range from $1L for sixty minutes to $4L for one hundred and fifty minutes.  (Hey, costs have to be covered somehow.)
Utopia contains the beach area, the forest (VIP area), play areas, and rental skyboxes which form the community.
At another time, I’d had a chance to meet Dai and Lori66 to talk about Utopia and why they’d established it.  I began by asking why they opened this club when there are so many others inworld.  Dai replied that they weren’t as much opening a club as just offering events at their sim.  What they offer will depend on what their guests want.  We were speaking at their grand opening which was a lot of fun.
When I ask what besides quality does Utopia wish to be known for, Lori said for the beauty of being able to come here and relax and play, to be able to share our vision of just some fun.  Dai added as a relaxing… no stress just friendly environment.
Lori66 continued saying that they wanted to do this for a long time, a beach that is open to the public, to come hang out (I was picking up a theme here) without a lot of distractions from stores, ads, etc. Just a beautiful place to come enjoy.  Dai giggled, adding that they just meshed really well to get it done together.  Lori66 retorted that the VIP area was done for Dai loves forests and wanted to offer their guests choices.
I asked about issues running the resort, Lori66 replied only the usual SL ones, griefers and such.  They work to keep the sim free from hassle for the enjoyment of the guests.
Overall, I’m impressed with Utopia.  The layout brings guests together in the center and permits them to wander off into the jungle and the beaches for privacy.  The atmosphere is realistic and fun.  The owners are friendly and helpful.  Other guests have been friendly and sociable when I’ve visited.
Utopia differs from other nudist resorts inworld by being more intimate and chummier than some of the larger ones which can be more crowded.  The resort is not just open spaces sparely populated by a few prims scattered about.  The owners have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a nice effect.
One thing for male visitors, erections are frowned upon so gents please respect the rules!
Another thing, donation jars are scattered across Utopia.  If you visit regularly please use them especially if you’re not a VIP.  (And it wouldn’t hurt if VIP’s kicked in a little extra from time to time!)  Sims are expensive to run.
Below please find links to some pictures that I took during my visit as well as a few that Lori66 sent me.  Since as Glorf Bulmer  would say we’re not that sort of blog, everyone has their clothes on.  Visit Utopia itself if you want to see anything else!
I’d like to thank Dai and Lori66 for taking the time to meet with me and answer my questions.  I’d also like to thank Cat for giving me the lead and caring enough about the SL community to refer me!
As always, I’m grateful to all inworld for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.

Sex and the Single Avatar in Second Life VIII – Nude Among the Submissives

There's the theory that nudity doesn't really make something sexy; the characters and their relationship make it sexy.

Tim Robbins

During my wanderings across Second Life (SL), I’ve been nude and I’ve visited BDSM sims.  But, I’ve never done both at the same time.  So, as I’ve been asking myself a lot lately inworld about a lot of things, why not?
I decide to head out and visit a few BDSM clubs in the altogether.  I hoped to take a friend along as several had indicated a willingness to accompany me on a jaunt like this but no one is available when I plan to go.  As in most things in my life, both SL and Real Life (RL), I’m on my own.  (Significant Other believes that when I’m off on my misadventures I should be on my own.  However, I’m always welcomed back.)
After a quick scan on SL’s search tool, I identify a few BDSM clubs to visit, check to make sure I’m naked (Yes, SL’s etiquette is different, isn’t it?), and off I go.
I begin with The Rose Unleashed BDSM Club.  I arrive at a club entrance in front of a marina.  The club is fairly typical if not outright vanilla.  A dance floor, a bar, a discussion area, and a game room (I see my first billiards table in SL here.) upstairs that opens onto the dance floor below form the club.
When I arrive a few people in various states of dress are dancing out on the dance floor.  I wander about.  A few patrons greet me but seem nonplussed by my state of undress and uninterested in me.  (That’s not a criticism.  Anything less than outright aggression is fine with me.)
Walking back to the entrance I see a destination guide and select the “Play House” which TP’s me to another building filled with BDSM furniture and equipment.  No one is around which is a shame because the facilities are fairly complete for a variety of practices.  Since things are quiet, I move onto my next destination.
My port of call is The Gateway to BDSM where I rezz into an open area in front of several destination boards.  Buildings in a classical Greek motif surround me.  A group of clothed people are sitting around talking and take no notice of me.  (I’m unsure if they were either just politely ignoring me or just too busy talking among themselves.)
I return to the destination boards and select the “Theme Area” and am TP’d to a large room filled with a few pieces of BDSM equipment. A large image of a crucified woman dominates the space.  But, as at my last destination, no one is about.  I’m noticing a pattern here.  (Although, in fairness, my biological clock may be running contrary to everyone else’s.)  So, once again I move on.
My third and final stop is Naughtyland BDSM Castle.  I land in a fully enclosed room with no doors or windows.  (I don’t know about anyone else but I hate these places inworld.  What if there’s a fire?  How do you get out?  They’re worse than casinos in Las Vegas.)  The space is crammed with BDSM equipment, furniture, and gaming equipment.
A walkway reached by stairs surrounds the open area.  One side has a large fireplace with comfortable armchairs which I avail myself of.  (What?  Walking around like I do would tire anyone out.)  On the other side, several rooms, one made out for private encounters of an intimate nature, open off the walkway.
Still no one around.  Although I do spot someone nearby on the map whom I IM after reading her profile.  (Always read the profiles, they’re there for a reason.)  She practices Wicca in both SL and RL.  I’ve been trying to meet members of this community inworld for a story and will shortly come back with one about Wicca in SL.
From here I return to my home in Nowaki.
What have I learned from my nude foray into BDSM in SL?
First, there are BDSM clubs out there that accept nudity.  What I also learned is that there may not be too many patrons there when you drop in.  Going alone may not be a good strategy. (Unless of course, you’re a wandering blogger who doesn’t know any better.)  Bring along a friend or friends (Wow, imagine that, actually having multiple friends!)  because the facilities are well equipped and can be enjoyed. Of course, varying the times of your visits may produce larger crowds than I encountered.  (And, no, unlike what Siginificant Other suggested, I don’t think all of SL is trying to avoid me!)
Next, while most of the clubs have similar facilities and equipment, their styles and layouts vary.  (What’s with all those large black and white posters of women in bondage? Doesn’t anyone ever tie up guys?  Sheesh!)  You should be able to find something you like.  I suspect that the atmosphere and clienteles vary as well.  I only selected three for this story.  There are many more.  Go out, explore!
Another observation as I traveled about.  All the clubs have tip jars and notices asking for donations to cover costs.  If you frequent these places regularly please make a donation to help maintain them and remember to tell your friends, or strangers for that matter, if you enjoyed yourself.
Below please find links to some pictures that I took along the way.  Since as Glorf Bulmer  would say we’re not that sort of blog, everyone has their clothes on.  But you can see the clubs.  Go inworld if you want to see anything else!
As always, I’m grateful to all inworld for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.

Two Years in Second Life

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

OK, I’ve blinked my eyes again and another year has passed.  About this time last year when I blogged about how quickly the prior year had gone by since my first blog in my Second Life (SL) journey, I’d written that the next twelve months would go by just as quickly.  And then, poof!  Here I am another year later at the second anniversary of beginning to blog about SL.
Since I have started the tradition of looking back and reminiscing about what I’ve done and haven’t done, I plan to meet expectations and do just that in this story.  (For those of my faithful readers who’d rather stick a needle in their eye than trip down memory lane with me, please go read my stories that you haven’t gotten to yet.  We’ll catch up next week.)
To recap for those of you who are just joining (or those of you who haven’t been paying attention), I began blogging about SL because I wanted to share with a larger audience my wanderings about the Grid.  Why was I even on the Grid in the first place?  Well, traveling about in Real Life (RL) is no longer an option for me as it once was.  (Significant Other still expects me home on a regular basis and quite rightly insists on a forwarding address those few times that I do get about these days.)  Also, I’d read the blog of Bunky Snowbear who had tried to walk across the SL grid before giving up.  I thought to myself, “Why not?”  (I’m still working with him to schedule an interview.  Bunky’s working in the SL film industry these days and has a great story to tell.)
So, I found myself slowly getting drawn into SL.  After a fairly conventional start inworld, I began to push the edges of the envelope in my second year.  I began spending more time among nudists and naturists.  (There is a difference between the two communities.  Trust me they’ll let you know what it is.)  Significant Other claims that I just don’t like getting dressed.  (It does answer the what to wear question very easily.) I visited BDSM sims.  I started to blog about sex in SL (Who knew there was birth control inworld?)  which led to my new regular series, Sex and the Single Avatar in Second Life.
For those who may be worried that I’m slowly turning into an oversexed, dirty, old avatar in SL, not to worry.  (Significant Other ROFL at the idea.)  I’ve been visiting and writing about other topics.  One of my goals has been to reach out to the various communities and experiences available inworld.
I found a community of pirates, visited Ancient Alexandria, interviewed two RL professors who had written a book about virtual worlds, wrote about the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the SL community, and visited several art galleries.  I also found time to enjoy myself and go out dancing with a friend.
What I’ve learned from all of this is that SL communities are real people who are in SL for their own personal reasons.  As I’m always reminded as I travel about inworld, there are real people with real feelings behind all those avatars.  I found this out myself from the outpouring of concern and well wishes I received from my inworld friends when they realized that I was literally in the eye of the storm of Hurricane Sandy.
I began another series, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in Second Life, in my blog where I visit recreations of ancient RL monuments in SL.  This has been an interesting project for two reasons.  First, the quality of work in creating these monuments is very high yet no one is ever around when I visit.  They are ghost towns.  Next, these stories are among some of my lowest read.  I guess the builders and I have to commiserate about here.  As I travel about inworld, I find this in many other sims, beautiful work deserted and empty.  In communicating with Bunky, he gave this as one of the main reasons as to why he abandoned his trek across the Grid.  No one was ever around as he traveled.  (Even in SL we’re social beings.)  I do worry about the long term implications of this for SL. How long will residents continue to pay for sims that remain unvisited?
I also spent time with my good friend, Perryn Peterson, and the steampunk community.  I’m still in awe of all the various projects and holiday celebrations he always seems to have underway not to mention STEAM: The Hunt the Renaissance Faire.
Spending as much time as I do inworld (Don’t worry about me losing touch with RL, Significant Other keeps me grounded in reality.)  I have a chance to think about some of the deep ideas about virtual life.  (Be warned, this is where things start to get heavy.)   I blogged about the communal aspects of life inworld.  Topics included friendship, social life, and the viability of SL as a civilization.  (I warned you.)  Humor was another one of looks at how we interact with one another inworld.  And, yes, fortunately we do have a sense of humor in SL.
These cerebral meanderings got me wondering about who we are in SL.  Do we have an identity?  Combined with my scribbles about the five senses inworld and I’m beginning to believe that there is a blurring of our real lives and our second lives.  (In RL, this is typically where my friends begin to leave the room.)
I then found myself blogging about trust and loss in SL.  After two years inworld, I’ve made friends and I’ve lost them.  Sometimes I know why.  Sometimes I don’t.  They just go away quietly.  We open ourselves up to one another in SL on a personal level when we stop and talk. We share feelings and thoughts.  RL issues sometimes come through. Family and economic concerns from RL are hard to miss even if the other party is not speaking of them specifically.  Their pain comes through.
SL’s dirty little secret got a lookover from me as well as the not so little dirty secret, bullying.  The former was bit tongue in cheek, the latter definitely not.  I was serious there.  Behaviors inworld parallel those in RL.  Good as well as bad.  We can’t look at SL simply as a game with no consequences.
I still look at the economics of SL.  I recently blogged about bitcoin and its availability inworld.  I’ve questioned the future of SL and Linden Lab’s (LL) responsibility for it.  One project on my drawing board is a new series in my blog entitled Shoemaker’s Children where I’ll blog about SL’s shortcomings and what LL needs to do to rectify them.  (I feel that I’ve finally arrived when I can criticize LL.)
As for my most recent attempt at a personal makeover inworld, probably the less said the better.
During this past year, I’ve lost touch with friends and communities because I keep traveling and moving along.  I’m juggling projects and schedules.  (I won’t even go into what RL is all about these days.)  I’m probably not the best friend to have inworld but to all who put up with me, I’m grateful for your support and friendship!
What have I learned in the past year?  Primarily, that SL is all about the people.  The RL people behind all those avatars.  The clothes, the bodies, the prims, scripts, and all the rest of it is secondary to the real people with real lives who make it all happen.
Going forward, I’ll continue my weekly blogs.  (I’m surprised I’ve been able to keep it up for as long as I have.)  I try to post more frequently.  I’ll also try to add to the variety of stories and I’m always open to ideas from my readers for new stories.
Next month is the tenth anniversary of SL’s launching. I’ll be dropping by the inworld celebrations.  As a rule, I generally avoid events like this but a tenth anniversary is an important one and I’d like to join everyone for the festivities and look forward to another ten years inworld.
As always, I’m grateful to all inworld for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.  I couldn’t possibly list everyone but you know who you are and please accept my humble thanks.  For those who have left SL and may not see this, you’re still remembered and I hope to meet up with you again.  May your real lives be happy and secure!
I welcome feedback from readers, please either comment on my blog or e-mail me at webspelunker@gmail.com .

Cinco de Mayo in Second Life

The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or woman.

 Willa Cather

Spring fever must be in the air because I’ve blogging a lot lately about spring events in Second Life (SL).  I suspect this long Real Life (RL) winter which still seems to be hanging around is making look for satisfaction inworld.  After my recent stories about an art exhibition opening and a fashion week, I’m ready to tackle another rite of spring, namely, Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo is a major holiday among the Mexican-American community in the United States and the State of Puebla in Mexico where the battle which the holiday commemorates took place in 1862.
Naturally, SL can’t resist an opportunity for a party arising from a holiday.  (Sometimes I think SL even celebrates the rare occasion when nowhere in RL is anyone celebrating anything!)  This goes especially for my good SL friend, Perryn Peterson, who took the opportunity this year to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
Perryn’s set up a Cinco de Mayo celebration that runs from May 4 to 12, 2013.  He can’t do anything without a kickoff party.  (It’s the little things in life that make it worth living after all.)   I’m invited and I go.  (I give Perryn a lot of credit, I have RL relations who only invite me to their parties when they want the other guests to leave.  And, no, despite what Significant Other may say, my mother is not one of them.  My father, on the other hand…)
I arrive at the landing zone and am greeted by a small Mexican village.  Mike Olbracht has worked his usual magic in terraforming Mieville to look like the geography associated with a particular holiday.
Walking through the streets, small homes and shops reveal their furnishings and purposes.  (It’s never this easy in RL.)  One thing I notice as I stroll along is the uniqueness of the scene.  There is none of that bland international style (loose use of the term) of hamburger joints, coffee shops, and whatever that is encountered these days all over the world.  Someday, if we’re not careful, only virtual worlds like SL will be left to remind us of what the world used to be like.  I encounter another friend, Saraid Dalglish,  owner  and operator of the Mad Hattery hat shop inworld and probably the best hat designer and scripter in SL.  (Watch this blog for a story about her and her work in the not too distant future.)  She is attired in a colorful local costume and her merchant’s stand has a full array of sombreros on display.
I make my way to Perryn’s Cantina (Funny, I could have sworn this was an Irish pub back on St. Patrick’s Day.)   As I enter, I find Perryn there.  I almost miss him as he has decided to come as a cactus.  (Cultural diversity can be taken to whole new levels in SL.)  Prof. Grey has elected to come as La Cucaracha complete with six shooters and sombrero.  Another guest, Mideon McMahon, is a mustachioed spider.  (I must have misread the invitation, I came in my usual steampunk attire.)
Other guests begin to arrive and soon the party is in full swing as all of Perryn’s parties ultimately do.  Many of the women are attired in colorful Mexican dresses reflecting on the many designers who are in Perryn’s circle of friends.  Others are dressed in everything from jeans to formal wear.  One guest seems to be made out as a Aztec warrior.  (If not, I apologize in advance.)  All the other guests were in human form except for the fox and parrot.  DJ Rab supplies the music as he does at many of Perryn’s functions.
Parties in SL, especially with close groups of friends within communities, I find are very much like good parties in RL.  Everyone knows everyone.  Newcomers are made to feel welcome and are included.  (Even me.)  Guests come and go.  Greetings are shouted back and forth.  Gossip is exchanged.  Friends catch up on things that have happened since they last met.  The only things missing are good food and drink.  (Although, they are on display, Perryn is a good host after all, and I can’t say what people may be consuming back in RL.)  From this perspective, this is a good, no, very good party.
I take my leave and walk out into the night onto the streets of a small Mexican town somewhere in SL.  It’s been a good evening.  Friends, dancing, music, and a connection to a happy time in RL are the formula for a good time in SL just as they are in RL.
If you want to visit Perryn’s Cinco de Mayo celebration, I encourage you to get there before it closes on May 12th.  Enjoy the events that have been scheduled and mingle with the other visitors.  Frequent the merchants and support them by buying their wares.  Also, contributions to the upkeep of the sim would be appreciated by Perryn and his team.  Also, Perryn told me a short while ago that events like Cinco de Mayo may not be repeated every year due to the effort in getting them ready.  So, don’t pass it up thinking you can see it next year.  You might not be able to!
I’d like to thank Perryn and his friends for inviting me to their party and making me feel at home.  I had a great time and I wish them every success in their endeavor.
As always, I’m grateful to all for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.

Tribute City Fashion Week in Second Life

I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men.

Marlene Dietrich

Spring is here! (At least in some places in the Northern Hemisphere.)  Last week I visited an art exhibition opening, a sure sign that the vernal equinox has passed and which means that fashion shows are starting to happen.  And Second Life (SL) is no exception, the Season has begun!
My SL friend, Jessii Warrhol , recently sent me a notice for the upcoming Tribute City Fashion Week running from May 31 to June 9, 2013.  Jessii is the co-owner and operator of Tribute City inworld.  She is also the owner of Club Capital and several other bistros in Tribute City.  Jessii operates on a seemingly non-stop mode producing shows inworld.  (Sometimes I can’t keep up with blogging about all of them.  Sorry Jessii!)
Tribute City and L’Amour  Management will be sponsoring the  Tribute City Fashion Week.  The event will show off the best spring and summer fashions from some of the most favorite designers in Second Life! The theme for the show is “April Showers Bring May Flowers”.
This show will feature and showcase designers who will present their modern, spring, and summer creations and accessories. In addition to the show, other festivities will include both a kick off and closing event and other entertainment.
Designers currently scheduled to present at the show include Allure, Evolve, Faboo, Flowerdreams, K-Code, Pomposity, Shey, Syl’s, and Xen’s Hats.
Designers will be in Tribute City, from May 31, 2013 to June 9, 2013, to present their modern, spring, and summer creations.
L'Amour Management is owned and operated by Ava Jhamin.  Ms. Jahmin has vast knowledge not only as model, but also Model Coordinator, Producer, and Director. Tribute City is a very busy shopping and entertainment sim inworld . The sim has an Italian influence and boasts five club venues, various shops, and monthly events and contests. Tribute City is owned and operated by Jessii2009 Warrhol.
For more information about this event, please contact either Ava Jhamin or Jessii2009 Warrhol in SL.  More details can be found on the show’s blog.
Events like Fashion Week are further examples to me of the creativity of the fashion and social communities inworld and their viability and sustainability.  Tribute City is one of those sims and can always be counted on for a continuing program of events and fun. Please check them out and patronize the designers and shops!
I’d like to thank Jessii for taking time out from her busy schedule to reach out to me.  I wish her well and look forward to visiting Fashion Week.  (And, yes, I will be appropriately attired. Otherwise, Jessii won’t let me in.)
As always, I’m grateful to all for their kindness and time in stopping to talk with a stranger who was passing through their lives.
I welcome feedback from readers, please either comment on my blog or e-mail me at webspelunker@gmail.com .
